동 연구는 경희대 홍종하, 고려대 김창영 선생과 공동 연구이다.

A new paleopathological project based on historical documents: Reconstructing health and disease in the Joseon Kingdom through household registers, genealogical records, diaries, and forensic investigation reports

Paleopathology seeks to obtain objective evidence regarding the history of diseases that affected our ancestors over long periods of time through the identification and scientific investigation of various health conditions, trauma, and illnesses preserved in human skeletal remains and mummified bodies excavated from archaeological sites. However, although such approaches allow us to understand past phenomena in a highly objective manner, they also possess limitations in terms of specificity when compared with historical research.
For example, in the case of an individual who suffered violence in the past, paleopathological analysis may enable us to estimate the cause of trauma or death, but it cannot reveal precisely how the injuries were inflicted or what kinds of tools or weapons were used. The same limitation applies to food consumption, which played a crucial role in determining the health conditions of people in the past. Although stable isotope analysis and other scientific methods can be used to estimate the types of foods consumed, these approaches provide only broad and generalized answers. More specific information regarding which foods were frequently eaten can only be identified through historical records. Finally, similar limitations apply to demographic studies conducted through skeletal analysis. Although anthropological research can provide valuable insights into past demographic conditions, far more detailed demographic information can be obtained when historical sources such as household registers and census records are available for investigation.
Therefore, we have recently initiated a new project in Korea that examines historical materials from the Joseon Dynasty from a paleopathological perspective, including genealogical records, household registers, diary accounts, and forensic investigation reports and others. In this project, we aim to supplement and strengthen our understanding of demographic patterns, dietary practices, diseases, and traumatic injuries through the integration of firmly documented historical evidence. Background and objectives: One Paleopathology is a novel concept in Paleopathology that extends the One Health paradigm into the past. A workshop at the University of Durham, UK, was held prior to the 2024 International Society for Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health (ISEMPH) meeting, firstly to define and expand the concept of One Paleopathology and secondly to generate transdisciplinary research and outreach under this framework. This article presents a logic model to evaluate how effectively the workshop met its goals.

Methodology: Two surveys were conducted, one immediately following the workshop and at the 1-year mark. These surveys assess the direct outputs from the workshop-tangible research and outreach products-as well as changes in participants' attitudes toward One Paleopathology and the degree to which transdisciplinarity was incorporated into resulting projects.

Results: Both the outputs (direct products of the workshop activities) and outcomes (changes in knowledge or attitude because of the activities) of the workshop suggest that the goals are being met. The first goal, to define and expand the concept of One Paleopathology, was met, with participants expressing strong acceptance of the framework. The second goal-generating transdisciplinary research-is reflected in eight ongoing projects initiated at the workshop.

Conclusions and implications: The workshop structure and outcomes assessment presented here evaluate an initial effort in effecting conceptual change in the social sciences. Participants were enthusiastic about One Paleopathology, and over the following year new collaborations and research agendas aligned with the concept emerged. Importantly, participants reported integrating transdisciplinarity into their long-erm research, indicating that the workshop had a sustained impact.

This book examines Joseon Dynasty mummies (15th–9th c.), highlighting their exceptional preservation and scientific value. It integrates historical and archaeological perspectives with biomedical research to explore cultural contexts, offering insights beyond Korea’s borders.

Mummies uncovered at archaeological sites worldwide have proven invaluable to the fi elds of history, archaeology, and anthropology. Their study offers rich opportunities to explore the sociocultural and medical dimensions of ancient peoples and societies, providing multi faceted insights into their lives within specific historical contexts.

This is equally true for mummies excavated from Joseon Dynasty graves dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Over the decades, systematic research in Korea has yielded invaluable data on the people of this era. Studies of Joseon mummies have provided important insights into the health and disease patterns of premodern East Asia, employing rigorous scientific methodologies.

Nevertheless, despite these advances, detailed accounts of the cultural context surrounding Korean mummies remain limited. Biomedical analyses have dominated the fi eld, but integrating historical and archaeological perspectives is essential for a more comprehensive understanding.

This book seeks to fill that gap. The authors advance the academic discourse by focusing on the historical, archaeological, and anthropological dimensions of Joseon-eriod mummies. In addition to the scientific study of the mummies themselves, chapters also highlight the wealth of information on dress and clothing that can be gleaned from the well-preserved examples from Joseon tombs, as well as discussing ethical issues and the legal framework to mummy studies in Korea. The second part of the book presents a series of significant case studies, showcasing key discoveries and demonstrating the development of scientific techniques. Overall the book provides a comprehensive exploration of the cultural background of Joseon Dynasty mummies, making this rich and diverse fi eld of study accessible to scholars outside Korea.

생물인류학적 연구에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 안정성동위원소 분석은 옛사람의 식생활 양상을 과학 적 근거에서 추정할 수 있게 한다는 점에서 매우 중요하지만 음식물을 구별하는 수준이 정밀하지 못하다는 점 에서 당시 식생활을 완전히 이해하는 데 있어 한계가 있다. 이를 보완하기 위해 조선시대 일기에 기록된 여러 음식물을 안정성동위원소 분석의 기준에 따라 구분하고 연구하는 작업은 향후 발굴 현장의 인골이나 미라 조 직 등 사람 유래 유기물에 대해 수행한 동위원소 분석 결과를 해석하는 데 있어 크게 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이 다. 본 연구에서 16세기 후반의 조선시대 일기인 쇄미록에 기록된 음식물을 안정성동위원소 분석 기준에 따라 분류하여 확인한 바에 따르면 당시 우리나라 서해안 지역에서는 쌀, 콩, 보리, 메밀, 밀 등을 중심으로 한 C3 식물을 조와 기장, 율무, 수수 등으로 이루어진 C4 식물보다 훨씬 다양하고 풍부하게 섭취하고 있었다. 곡물을 제외한 해양성/담수성/육지성 음식물의 경우에는 담수성보다 해양성 및 육지성 음식물이 훨씬 많이 소비되었다. 이 중 육지성 음식물에는 꿩, 소, 닭, 노루, 돼지, 개 등이 많았고 해양성 음식물에는 조기, 민어, 준치, 대구, 갈 치, 도미, 고등어, 정어리 등이 많았다. 이처럼 일기자료에 대한 분석은 안정성동위원소 분석의 해석에 있어 매 우 중요한 정보를 제공할 수 있으므로 앞으로 더 많은 조선시대 일기에 대해 유사한 연구가 시도된다면 생물 인류학적으로 의미 있는 당시 식생활에 대한 정보 해석의 수준이 한층 높아질 것이라 본다.
